History

The Polar Bear Plunge was the first official event of its kind in the Seattle area. Janet Wilson started the event off on January 1st 2003. The First Polar Bear Plunge had approximately 300 participants. Since then the attendance has reached nearly 1000 brave bears. The plunge has been responsible for inspiring other similar events in the Seattle Area. The Polar Bear Plunge is a family event with costumes, warm beverages, and a badge of courage (patch) following the total emersion.

"Plungers are 'Polarized' towards two styles. Some luxuriate in the refreshingly brisk waters. Others stay in as long as they can 'BEAR' it."
~ Tim Ewings
