Portland , Oregon
TriMet’s MAX light rail
Portland has ridden their light rail system to significant greenhouse gas
reductions. Public transit use has grown a remarkable 75 percent since 1990,
with 28 percent of all weekday transit trips taken on MAX light rail. And with
the first Climate
Action Plan in the nation, Portland has recently reported
an overall decrease in emissions to about 1990 levels—and per capita
reductions of 13 percent.
Denver, Colorado
FasTracks
In one of the most ambitious mass transportation initiatives in U.S. history,
Denver voters passed a $4.7 billion public transit package in 2004 that will
open 119 additional miles of light and commuter rail by 2016.
Mexico City , Mexico
EMBARQ
Planned, designed, and implemented in under three years, Mexico City ’s
80-bus system carries 250,000 daily passengers along a 12 mile, 36-station
exclusive corridor system. The city’s Metrobus initially secured $1.4
million in funding from NGOs and foundations, leveraged to over $50 million.
The World Bank estimates 35,000 tons annually of greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
The Bay Area ( San Francisco , Oakland , Berkeley ), California
City Car Share program
With thousands of members, City CarShare is a nonprofit launched by a consortium
of local nonprofits in 2001 to provide convenient and affordable access to
cars to reduce individual car ownership. Members pay by the hour for access
to cars—many of which are hybrid cars.
Philadelphia , Pennsylvania
PhillyCarShare
In 2004-5, the City of Philadelphia and PhillyCarShare created a pioneering
car share system that included local residents and government employees. The
partnership replaced 330 municipal vehicles, saving the city $2 million each
year and reducing car use by 30 percent, and replaced 1,200 citizen vehicles,
saving about $5.5 million and resulting in 8.2 million fewer miles driven each
year.

King
County Metro’s Trip Planner
A winner of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Transit Website Award,
King County Metro’s Trip Planner helps improve transit ridership by providing
well-organized and real-time information about transit routes and schedules.
Puget Sound Region, Washington
Sound Transit
Light rail service in Tacoma connects downtown points of interest and carried
more than the projected number of rider-trips for 2010 in most of the first
few weeks of operation in 2003. Central Link is a 15.7 mile line running between
Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport currently under construction and scheduled to open
in 2009. An additional line, North Link, will serve 150,000 daily commuters
from four urban centers and is currently in the planning stage.
Salt Lake City , Utah
Free metered parking for green vehicles
Salt Lake City is encouraging the purchase and use of fuel-efficient vehicles,
allowing drivers to park free. About 3,500 vehicles in the state are currently
eligible.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen ’s
cycling program
Over 36 percent of Copenhagen commutes by bike to work each day—more
than the 25 percent who drive to work. The city has taken one of the strongest
approaches in the world toward creating a community of cycling by creating
wider bike paths from parking spaces, adding new bike lanes, improving intersections
with signals for bike lanes, requiring taxis to have the capacity to carry
bicycles, and making bikes available throughout the city. Between 20-25 percent
of Copenhagen ’s road budget is spent on bicycling and the 200 miles
of bike paths along roads, while 90 percent of Copenhageners own a bicycle.
Marin County , California
Safe Routes to School
Marin County was chosen for a national pilot project that has now grown to
37 schools and over 16,000 students. The successful Safe Routes to School program
has seen single student trips have dropped by 13 percent, saving over 4250
one-way trips each day and five years of steady biking and walking growth.

Cordon Charge
London ’s congestion pricing program reduced automobile traffic
in the downtown core by about 20 percent, increased traffic speed by
37 percent, and demonstrated nearly 20 percent reduction in greenhouse
gas emissions. Despite initial controversy, public and business acceptance
has grown strongly and annual net revenue is more than 90 million pounds.
Trondheim , Norway
Toll ring
With 12 toll stations, Trondheim ’s congestion pricing program
has reduced inbound traffic by 10 percent; revenue is being used for
road maintenance, transit, and pedestrian and bicycling facilities.
