  • Austin Green Building Program: A comprehensive rating program for construction of healthy and environmentally friendly homes.
  • King County Green Building Program: Emphasizes construction waste management and recycling; includes case studies and online tool to help buildings attain LEED certification.

Some of the most commonly referenced sustainable development and green building programs and services across the nation are provided below.

Sustainable Development

  • Public Technology, Inc.’s Urban Consortium: This national nonprofit, with the mission of furthering the use of technology for cities and counties, conducts research on pressing urban problems.   Visit the site for descriptions of the Urban Consortium’s research task forces: Energy, Environmental, and Transportation.
  • South Lake Union Sustainable Resource Guide: This 185 page document, prepared by Seattle's Mithun Architects, examines the potential for sustainable redevelopment of Seattle's South Lake Union area. Note: this is a large PDF document, and may take some time to load.
  • Sustainable Seattle: A citizens’ group with the mission of creating a more sustainable society in the Puget Sound.
  • U.S. Department of Energy’s Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development: Examples of sustainable communities, technical and financial resources for sustainable development, and model codes and ordinances.

Sustainable Design & Construction

  • American Institue of Architects Committee on the Environment: Promotes sustainability by dispersing knowledge on green building design and organizes a yearly "Top Ten Green Projects" design competition. Seattle's active chapter organizes the annual "What Makes it GREEN?" project exhibit.
  • Architectural Record's "Green Architect":  Monthly architectural periodical features a sustainable building section on its website.
  • BetterBricks.com: Dedicated to improving the work environment and conserving resources at the same time, this Web site and advisor service highlights real-life examples of businesses and organizations that have  lighting, thermal comfort, and air quality.
  • Built Green: Residential green building rating system, developed by the Master Builder's Association of King and Snohomish Counties in Washington State encourages health and environmental protection in single and multifamily new construction, remodels, and community developments.
  • Design With Memory:  Committed to the development of new materials and sustainable design in product design and architecture
  • Development Center for Appropriate Technology: A nonprofit that provides strategic support for shifting to sustainable building practices.
  • Global Green USA:  U.S. affiliate of Green Cross International, fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future
  • Green Building Information Council: Broad range of resources from Canada and around the world about environmental architecture, construction, and development.
  • Green Building Products by McGraw-Hill Sweets
  • Green Roofs:  the green roof industry resource portal
  • High Performance Buildings Database: Information-rich database featuring green buildings around the country. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the site includes detailed information and images on multiple building types.
  • International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Northwest Chapter
  • LEED Green Building Rating System: Voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings
  • National Association of Homebuilders Research Center Green Building Program
  • Northwest Ecobuilding Guild: This Pacific Northwest nonprofit association of architects, contractors, homeownwers, students, and others interested in green building offers a range of activities through local chapters and a searchable database of members.
  • Rocky Mountain Institute: This nonprofit organization fosters the more efficient and sustainable use of resources by providing assistance and information to businesses and organizations.  See the Buildings and Land section of their site for Sustainable Building related information.
  • Sustainable Building Sources: Listings of other sustainable building resources compiled by the City of Austin, Texas.
  • U.S. Green Building Council - National Coalition: Non-profit organization that promotes green building policies, programs, technologies, standards, and design practices.

  • Urban Green:  New Seattle resouce center for sustainable development opening in 2006.
