Environmental Priorities for Seattle

Environmental Action Agenda

The City of Seattle has emerged as a national leader in raising awareness and inspiring action in the fight against climate disruption. The 2006-2007 Environmental Action Agenda recounts the successes and lays out next steps on climate protection, in addition to detailing the City's work in restoring and protecting our valuable urban forest. The Agenda also spells out the City's efforts to rebuild wetlands and natural drainage systems, restore creeks, and protect water quality. Finally, the Agenda outlines the ways the City is making neighborhoods--and people--healthier through "green" building programs and development that promotes walking, cycling and transit use.

Starting in 1998, the City's Environmental Management Program was initiated to provide an overarching framework to systematically reduce the environmental impacts of the City's operations. While several parts of this program are still underway, the overall guide for the City's environmental work is now the Environmental Action Agenda (EAA). The EAA goes beyond the City's operations to consider broader community sustainability issues and is organized into 4 priority areas:
