Mayor Nickels and City Council President Conlin have proposed a 20-cent “green fee” on all disposable shopping bags at the city’s grocery, drug and convenience stores. The proposal also calls for a ban on foam containers in the food service industry. If adopted by the City Council, the waste prevention measures would take effect Jan. 1, 2009.

Seattle Climate Action Plan
Mayor Nickels' Green Ribbon Commission on Climate Protection is calling on the entire community to join the fight against climate disruption with the release of the Seattle Climate Action Plan, the most comprehensive program in the city's history for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.


Environmental Action Agenda
The cornerstone of this agenda is a new goal for the City to reduce regional greenhouse gas emissions across our community and region, seeking to meet or beat the Kyoto target.

10 Year Plan to End Homelessness

The City invests nearly $40 million a year to prevent and end homelessness. We also provide temporary support services to keep people without homes safe and healthy so they can regain stability and rebuild their lives.
