Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: Admiral Community
Date of Cleanup: April 28, 2007
On Saturday, April 28, 2007, Mayor Greg Nickels
led more sixty-five (65) volunteers as they cleaned the Admiral community
in West Seattle . Participants from Admiral Neighborhood Association,
West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, City Year Seattle/King County and students
from the University of Washington. , picked up litter and planted trees
and native plants. Barb Graff, Director of the City’s Office of Emergency
Management presented Mayor Nickels with a Disaster Preparedness Month shirt.
Mayor Nickels created the Clean & Green program shortly
after taking office in 2002. The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Parks
and Recreation, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Police Department,
Seattle City Light, the Department of Corrections, King County Juvenile work
teams and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort. Anthony Harris took digital photographs.
Special recognition goes out to the following individuals:
Dave Weitzel, Admiral area resident and owner of Weitzel Construction for
donating plants and groundcover valued at over $1,300.
Mark Sindell of the architectural and landscaping firm
of GGLO. Sindell assisted by identifying the plants and ordering them at
GGLO’s wholesale
price.
Rebecca Plett, manager of the Admiral Way Starbucks for her part in coordinating
with Shane DeWald and Win Abelson of SDOT, the creation of three (3) tree
pits on the east side of the building. Plett, along with the Admiral Neighborhood
Association will be applying for a Starbucks matching grant to raise funds
to hire a watering company to water the plants and groundcover during the
summer months. Finally, Plett and assistant store manager Joell Coltrane provided
refreshments for the volunteers.
Glen Hassedt, store director of the Admiral Metropolitan Market for providing
the staging site for the kick-off event, as well as coffee, juice, pastries
and brown bag lunches to the volunteers.
Mark Wainwright, president of the Admiral Neighborhood
Association for helping spread the word about the Clean & Green event. Wainwright also created
a large 11”X17” poster that was posted throughout the Admiral
neighborhood.
Willie Rogers of the Parks Department and member of the
Rainier Bass Fishing Club for recruiting members of the Club to participate
in the Clean & Green
event.
Cleanup Activities:
-
3 tons of asphalt was used on 14 sidewalk shims and 15 potholes
- 20 Curb Miles and 5 loads of sweeping debris were removed from this area
- Urban forestry planted four trees, one replacement and three new trees,
on Admiral and on S.W. 41 St.
- Crews worked with volunteers on weeding, planting,
adding soil and a final mulch on the treepits along the S/s of Admiral 41st
to California
- Two yards of soil, two yards of bark mulch were provided
by SDOT forces
- 41 streetlights repaired
- Collected 225 pounds of litter
