Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: Alki Beach Park
Date of Cleanup: May 14, 2005
Departments: Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation,
Seattle Department of Neighborhoods,
Department of Correction work crews
and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services
Division.
On Saturday, May 14, 2005 , Mayor Greg Nickels and the Alki Community
Council led more than 90 community volunteers greening and cleaning Alki’s
beach parks and surrounding area.
Volunteer activities included litter pick-up and removal of invasive plants.
Refreshments and coupons were provided in part by Starbucks, Tully’s,
Duke’s and neighborhood businesses. The Seattle Times, KCPQ
and local newspapers covered the event.
Cleanup Activities:
- Repainted the bike lane/edge of roadway along Alki Business (
Alki Av SW between 57 and 63 Ave) strip to better
define parking spots and roadway
- Installed barrier areas with white paint for no parking areas along Alki
AV
- Installed 2 no parking anytime signs at SW Lander St between 57 and
63 Ave SW.
- Signs cleaned: (6), Street Name Signs cleaned (4), Metro signs cleaned (6), control box cleaned (1),
utility Poles cleaned of decals and posters (21)
- Street Cleaning crews swept 52 curb miles removing 7 tons of material.
- Pothole Rangers used 1.5 tons of asphalt to repair 7 potholes and install
8 shims.
- 55 streetlights repaired
- 1,000 lbs of noxious weed
- 40 graffiti paintouts
