Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Beacon Hill

Date of Cleanup:  March 19th, 2005

Departments:  Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews, “ Seattle Works,” King County Department of Adult Juvenile Detention (DAJD) and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division.

On Saturday, March 19th, Mayor Greg and Mrs. Sharon Nickels led more than 70 Asa Mercer Middle School PTSA, students and parents, residents, business owners, and community volunteers to green and clean Beacon Hill.

Participating Beacon Hill organizations included: Asa Mercer students and staff; Asa Mercer Associate Student Body; Asa Mercer PTSA group; North Beacon Hill Council; Beacon Hill Chamber; Beacon Alliance of Neighbors; Beacon Hill Community; Beacon Hill Pedestrian Task Force; and Jose Rizal Park-Off Leash; and Yat-Sen Chinese School.

Volunteer activities included litter pick-up, sealing tiles at an art on site project, spreading mulch , removal of black berry bushes and storm drain stenciling.

 

Cleanup Activities:

  • One ton of asphalt was used to patch potholes and install sidewalk shims in areas where the sidewalk was uneven
  • 12 curb miles of street and public parking areas were hand cleaned and/or mechanically swept
  • 16 tons of gravel was used to patch road shoulders
  • Removed 1380 pounds of litter and debris
  • 36 storm drains were stenciled
  • 32 Graffiti paintouts
  • 74 Graffiti removals
  • 6 yards of wood chips spread
