Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Crown Hill

Date of Cleanup: August 27, 2005

Departments:  Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division, Seattle Works, King County Juvenile work team, Department of Correction work crews and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division

On Saturday, August 27, 2005 , Mayor Greg Nickels and Sharon Nickels led more than 60 community volunteers to clean and green Capitol Hill’s Pike Pine community. This is the first time that the Mayor has kicked off the Clean and Green clean up in the Pike Pine neighborhood and the first time that the event was held at a restaurant.

Host Robert Sondheim, owner of the Rosebud Restaurant introduced the mayor to the volunteers. Community participants included Denise Harnly of Seattle Neighborhood Group (involved in the Weed and Seed Program), Mary Williams, of Seattle Neighborhood Group (Weed and Seed Program), and faculty members of Northwest School . Jill Janow from Pike/Pine Urban Neighborhood Coalition, Volunteers from the POWHAT (Pine Olive Way Harvard at triangle) organization and the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition also participated.

Volunteer activities included watering street tree pits and litter pick-up. Refreshments were provided in part by community businesses. Seattle Channel television and the Capitol Hill community newspaper covered the event.

 

Cleanup Activities:

  • swept 18 curb miles
  • filled potholes in 6 locations using 1 ton of asphalt
  • cleaned 92 Signs
  • painted 360 curb feet
  • performed litter cleanup on 1.8 miles collecting approximately 75 lbs. of debris
  • cleaned 5 bike racks
  • cleaned 13 pedestrian signals
  • installed 8 new signs
