Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup:  Broadway

Date of Cleanup:  November 17, 2003

Departments:  Seattle Parks and Recreation, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division

More than 75 Neighborhood volunteers, along with the services of Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and SPU Community Services Division cleaned up the area near and around Broadway Saturday, November 17.

The "Clean Seattle" team partnered with the Capitol Hill Community Council, Chamber of Commerce, BIA, Kids of the Street, Friends of Cal Anderson Park, Weed & Seed, and Seattle Central Community College. The volunteer crews worked through the day at locations throughout Capitol Hill picking up litter along Broadway and 11th, removing graffiti from dumpsters, cleaning the community college and cleaning Cal Anderson Park. In the park, volunteers and the Mayor planted bulbs. Participants met at the Shelter House in Cal Anderson Park. Forty-five people attended the Cal Anderson kickoff event with the Mayor and Seattle CCC President. Friends of Cal Anderson and Groundswell Off Broadway were honored. Department of Neighborhoods plaque unveiled over fireplace in Cal Anderson Park Shelterhouse. Ten youth and teens devoted time to cigarette butt removal on park grounds.

Mayor Nickels and Seattle Central Community College President Mildred Ollee acknowledged community activists' efforts in identifying Capitol Hill issues that, when resolved, will appreciably improve this important part of our city. Recently, Mayor Greg Nickels announced a wide-ranging effort to address these issues, including crime and drug use in and around Cal Anderson Park.

The South Community College Newspaper and the Capitol Hill Times covered the event.
