Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup:  Delridge

Date of Cleanup:  March 1, 2003

Boundries:  Delridge to South Alaska to Avalon Way to south Spokane

Departments:  Parks, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Transportation, City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, DCLU, Arts & Cultural Affairs, Department of Corrections, SPD Crime Prevention & Parking Enforcement

Cleanup Activities:

  • SPU Rangers removed and/or painted more than 171 graffiti tags on public property such as light poles, control boxes, utility poles and metro bus shelters.


  • State Department of Correction crews conducted a litter and illegal dumping debris pickup along the perimeter of the cleanup area, collecting more than 20 bags of litter from Alaska, Delridge Way, Spokane Street and around the Nucor steel plant.


  • SDOT Signs and Markings crews removed graffiti from 11 traffic signs and one signal control box and replaced 9 damaged, weathered or missing traffic signs.


  • Street Maintenance crews swept 17 curb miles of streets removing 4 tons of sweeping debris.


  • Street Maintenance crews cleaned one pathway on the east side of Delridge Way SW between SW Dakota and SW Genesse Streets and mowed overgrowth at 28th Ave SW north of SW Nevada (bullrail location) and on the south side of SW Alaska St west of 25th Ave SW.


  • Street Maintenance crews patched the asphalt around the support pillar on the south side of SW Spokane Street west of Delridge Way SW and repaired 8 street defects or potholes at various locations throughout the neighborhood


  • City Light repaired or replaced 18 lights in the North Delridge Neighborhood area.


Volunteer Activity

  • Ron Angeles of DON was on hand to support the cleanup with support from Lauri Ames on coordination of volunteer assignments and supervision of students from Chief Sealth High School filming the event. Natasha Jones of DON also helped with media. Thanks to Nucor and those who planned the Cooper School celebration (Delridge Neighborhood Development Association).


  • A total of 32 volunteers helped out with the project including 10 volunteers from Nucor, 20 Chief Sealth High School students, and 2 from the Delridge community.
