Cleanup: Maple Leaf

On Saturday, August 16, Mayor Nickels, with help from the above agencies, led approximately 40 neighborhood volunteers in cleaning up the areas around Northgate/Maple Leaf/Thornton Creek.
The "Clean Seattle" team partnered with the Maple Leaf Community Council, Thornton Creek Alliance, Northgate Chamber of Commerce, Simon Properties, Varsity Management and volunteers from King County's Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention in removal of invasive plants, ivy cutting, litter pick-ups, street cleaning, streetlight repairs, and graffiti paint-outs. The clean-up team collected more than 89 bags of weed/leaf cuttings and garbage.
Mayor Nickels participated by acknowledging the upcoming Fifth Avenue NE improvements, Northgate library, park construction, and Thornton Creek enhancements. The Mayor led CSI participants in removing invasive plants at Thornton Creek Park #6, as well as, litter pick-up at along Roosevelt Ave.
Cleanup Activities:
- Replaced 15 damaged, weathered or missing traffic signs.
- Applied two tons of asphalt.
- Swept 15 miles of curb.
- Weeded two acres of landscaped area.
- Removed four tons of shrubbery.
- Repainted curbs at 10 locations.
- Repaired or relamped 83 streetlights.
- Removed five bags of garbage.
- Removed 24 bags of invasive plants.
- Removed 60 bags of invasive plants.
- Painted out 25 graffiti sites.
- Collected 100 bags of vegetation and litter.
- Cleaned up half an acre of land.
- Spent 80 crew and eight supervisor hours on cleanup.
