Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Crown Hill

Date of Cleanup: July 23, 2005

Departments:  Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division

On Saturday, July 23, 2005, Mayor Greg Nickels led more than 60 community volunteers to green and clean Ballard’s Crown Hill community. Community groups included: The Crown Hill Business Association, the15th NW Association, the Whittier Heights Community Council, and CATCH.

Volunteer activities included painting out graffiti, litter pick-up and removal of invasive plants.

 

Cleanup Activities:

  • Cleaned graffiti from 70 locations
  • Repaired 43 streetlights
  • 3 bags of garbage picked up
  • hedged weeded and pruned
  • removed two dead trees and did some spraying of weeds in the adjoining areas
  • Met with volunteers at Crown Hill Glen Natural Area to discuss their work party and other park maintenance issues.
  • Inspected Baker Park and discussed volunteer opportunities and maintenance issues with Volunteer site Steward Andrea Faste.
  • A NW Parks crew weeded and pruned the landscape at the Ballard Pool.
  • NW Parks assistant gardener pruned 1000 sq feet of lavender at Soundview.
  • Parks staff replaced a dying shrub and planted about 50 perennial flowers and groundcover plants, and watered landscape around Salmon Bay Park Comfort Station.
  • Park Tree Crew cut down a hazardous tree at Salmon Bay Park and two dead pine trees at Soundview Playground
