Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Madison-Miller Community

Date of Cleanup:  January 20, 2007

On Saturday, January 20, 2007, DON Director Stella Chao on behalf of Mayor Greg Nickels led more than sixty (60) volunteers as they cleaned and greened the Miller/Madison Community. Participants from Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program residents, McKinney Manor residents, Madison Task Force Mount Zion Church, MadCap residents, Miller Park residents, Prince Wales tenants, City Year, Ballard High School, Franklin High School, and King County Juveniles’ program collected litter and removed dead leaves.

Community Representatives, Director Chao, and SPD Captain Black planted a golden maple tree at the Miller Park Community Center. The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Police Department, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Department of Corrections, Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort. Anthony Harris took digital photographs.

Cleanup Activities:

  • 44 streetlights repaired/relamped
  • One golden maple tree planted
  • 10 yards of bark/wood chips spread
  • 100 square ft. area weeded
  • DAJD work crewspicked up more than 150 lbs of litter
  • DOC workers collected 88 bags of litter that weighed
    out at 1320 lbs.

Emergency preparedness information was available for the first time at the January 20th Clean and Green Seattle event.
