Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Othello Park

Date of Cleanup:  April 9, 2005

Departments:  Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews, “ Seattle Works,” King County Department of Adult Juvenile Detention (DAJD) and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division.

On Saturday, April 9, Mayor Greg Nickels led more than 60 community, Seattle Works and King County juvenile volunteers to green and clean Southeast Seattle’ Othello Park and surrounding area.

Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews, “ Seattle Works,” King County Department of Adult Juvenile Detention (DAJD) and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division were also a part of the effort.

Volunteer activities included litter pick-up, spreading mulch , removal of black berry bushes and storm drain stenciling. Refreshments were provided in part by Starbucks. Digital photographs were taken.

 

Cleanup Activities:

  • Painted one curb red and installed 3 tow away zone signs
  • Patched 5 potholes and swept 18 curb miles of residential and arterial streets
  • 20 Department of Corrections youth volunteers created two groves around trees by spreading 40 sheets of cardboard and mulching with 9 yards of coarse wood chips
  • planted 200 daffodil bulbs in the new groves and mulched two additional tree wells with chips
  • 20 Department of Corrections adult volunteers removed two tarp loads of blackberries and ivy from 20 trees on a steep hillside
  • 5 neighbors of the park removed two large garbage bags of weeds from two shrub beds, planted 40 daffodil bulbs, two variegated lungwort plants, and seven fawn lilies
  • 10 AmeriCorps Volunteers picked up 28 bags of litter from the area surrounding the park and one bag of litter from within the park
  • 600lbs. of litter collected over all
