Cleanup: Rainier Beach
Date of Cleanup: August 18, 2007
On Saturday, August 18, 2007, Mayor Nickels’ led more than forty (40) volunteers as they cleaned and removed brush from Mapes Creek Walkway. Co-Sponsors included Rainier Beach Merchants Association, Rainier Beach Coalition for Community Empowerment, Rainier Beach Community Club, Rainier Beach High School, Rainier Beach Community Center & Advisory Council, SE Weed & Seed, and the Lake Washington Apartments. Participants also included Ray Anderson and Barb Biondo. Mayor Nickels spread wood chips at several tree pits along S. Henderson.
Mayor Nickels created the Clean & Green program shortly
after taking office in 2002. The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Parks
and Recreation, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Police Department,
Seattle City Light, the Department of Corrections, King County Juvenile work
teams and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort.

Cleanup Activities:

Provided 40 yards of bark mulch.
- Cleaned and mulched 30+ tree pits along Rainier Avenue.
- Collected 100 bags of litter/brush/dirt/debris equaling approximately 3,000 lbs.
- Two yards of soil, two yards of bark mulch were provided
by SDOT forces
- 41 streetlights repaired
- Collected 225 pounds of litter
SDOT Urban Forestry with the help of volunteers applied 18 cubic yards of bark to 74 tree pits,
cleaned or sprayed an additional 61 tree pits,
pruned 49 small trees (sucker removal or structural prune)
and in coordination with Seattle City Light contractor Asplundh provided major pruning (business district building clearance, street clearance) of 12 large oak trees over Metro Trolley Lines and under Seattle City Light Power Lines.
